Alfredo Balcacer

Alfredo Balcacer is a guitarist and educator from the Dominican Republic, currently living in Kalamazoo, MI. He graduated with a degree in Music Performance from Utah State University, and is currently finishing his masters degree in Music Performance at Western Michigan University. After coming to the United States, he has studied with Corey and Mike Christiansen, Fareed Haque, Tom Knific, Pat Martino, Bryan Baker, Fred Hamilton, Ed Simon, among others.

Alfredo has performed in the USA, Brazil, Canada and the Dominican Republic, and taught guitar privately for 8 years back in his home country, both in high-schools and at his private studio. Besides being a former member of the award-winning groups such a Gold Company Vocal Ensemble, USU Jazz Orchestra, WMU Jazz Orchestra and Mas Que Nada Latin Group, Alfredo is also a recipient of scholarships by the Dominican Republic Government, Utah State Caine College of the Arts and WMU Department of Music.

For the past 10 years, Alfredo has performed and collaborated with many artists such as Peter Erskine, Randy Brecker, Corey Christiansen, George Garzone, Peter Eldridge, Cedric Dent, Jeremy Siskind, Deborah Brown, and Tom Knific, among others. As attendee to many masterclasses, he has performed with John Scofield, Chico Pinheiro, Julian Lage, Peter Bernstein, Steve Kovalcheck and Philip Catherine.

John Hosley

Retired after 34 year career as a research associate beginning with the Upjohn Co. in 1983, and continuing through its transitions to Pharmacia, Pfizer, and finally Zoetis, John Hosley has begun a second career teaching guitar and mandolin.

John studied classical guitar with Miles Kusik beginning in the mid-1980s, studied plectrum guitar in the 1990s, and began studying classical mandolin in the 2000s. John was one of the founding members of, and guitarist turned mandolinist for, the Kalamazoo Mandolin and Guitar Orchestra, and is a member of the Classical Mandolin Society of America. John performs as both mandolinist and guitarist as a member the Third Coast Ensemble and the Parlor Guitar Ensemble.

John is also the lead instructor for Crescendo’s Mando for Kids program, a group class that introduces kids to classical mandolin.

Adam Schumaker

  • Master of Music in Composition and Music Theory, Western Michigan University
  • Bachelor of Arts in Music, Principia College, Elsah, IL

Adam Schumaker holds a B.A. in Music from Principia College, and an M.M. in Composition from Western Michigan University. He currently teaches at Western Michigan and K College, while maintaining the position of Director of Educational Activities at the Gilmore Keyboard Festival.

As a composer he has written for Stryker Medical, WMU’s Theater and Dance Departments, and the KSO. His compositions range from contemporary acoustic art music to popular song, academic electronic, acoustimatic music, new age relaxation, and music for stage.
