The Crescendo Fiddlers was formed by faculty member Sarah Hedlund in 2006, to give violin students the opportunity to explore their interest in folk fiddle music. Since then, the group has grown to include not just violinists but violas, guitar and bass. Membership has always spanned multiple generations: currently, the youngest member is seven years old, and the oldest is seventy! Their music also spans multiple cultures, from American to Celtic to Swedish to Chinese fiddling styles.
Now led by Joanna Steinhauser, the Fiddlers have become a sought-after group on the Kalamazoo folk music scene, performing at Farmers’ Markets in Kalamazoo, Springfield, Athens, Vicksburg, Richland and Texas Township, as well as for the Oshtemo Historical Society, the VanBuren Historical Society, the Kalamazoo Psychiatric Hospital, and the Scotts Harvest Festival and Old Time Steam Show.
The group has been featured in several Kalamazoo Art Hops and performs at the KIA Art Fair and at Bronson Park Fridays. The Fiddlers were featured for the first time at the Wheatland Music Festival in Remus, MI last fall.
The Crescendo Fiddlers perform free of charge as representatives of Crescendo Academy of Music. To inquire about bookings, call or email our office. Membership in the Fiddlers is open to violin, viola, cello, and string bass players of all ages. Two to three years’ playing experience is usually necessary to handle our repertoire. Fiddle Club runs September 2016 – May 2017, meeting on the 2nd Saturday of each month from 1:00 – 2:00 pm ( Oct 8, Nov 12, Dec 10, Jan 14, Feb 11, Mar 11, Apr 8, May 13, June 10). Drop in cost for each fiddle club meeting is $15.
The Crescendo Fiddlers kick off their summer season with a bang on June 6! Classes for the summer session will meet weekly on Mondays, 6:30 – 7:30 pm from June 6 to August 15. The ensemble welcomes violin, viola, cello, and string bass players of all ages who have played for at least three years. In addition to weekly classes, the Crescendo Fiddlers perform throughout the summer at regional folk music festivals, community events and farmers’ markets. Cost for the summer session is $190 for returning members and $205 for new members (includes t-shirt and music binder).
